Description
Produced with a marked acidity that makes it highly suited to evolution and ageing; its savouriness and minerality are an expression of the terroir in which Tenuta Grimaldi is born and grows.
Vinification
and ageing
After an initial selection, the grapes from the different plots are pressed and vinified separately. Vinification takes place in steel tanks and Austrian and French oak barrels, where the wines continue to age until June, when they are blended. Further ageing continues in the bottle before the wine is released for sale.
MILLESIMO
The 2020 vintage was overall distinctive. Autumn and winter did not show significant drops in temperature. Rainfall was minimal and water reserves were only partially replenished. Vegetative growth was rapid and uniform, and in this respect temperatures above seasonal averages played an important role. From mid-May until the first ten days of June, rainfall was constant. These conditions were accompanied by low temperatures during the flowering period, with direct effects on fruit set. As a result, the productive load per vine was regular from the herbaceous growth phase, and the clusters were smaller and looser compared to the varietal average. The summer season followed seasonal averages, with moderate temperatures that allowed regular activity of the vegetative canopy. On the other hand, rainfall was practically absent, especially in August. Careful attention to soil management and canopy management was of fundamental importance in limiting possible negative consequences. In the first ten days of September, a significant weather disturbance brought abundant rainfall, which positively contributed to the final phase of ripening, delaying technological maturity and making it possible to wait slightly longer for the phenolic and aromatic maturity of the grapes.

HARVEST PERIOD
26 September – 9 October
VINIFICATION AND AGEING
The harvest is carried out by hand in small containers (approximately 18 kilograms). After an initial selection, the grapes from the different parcels are pressed and vinified separately. Vinification is carried out entirely in stainless steel tanks, where the wines continue their ageing until June, when blending takes place. Further ageing then continues in bottle until release.

MILLESIMO
The 2021 vintage will be remembered for low spring–summer rainfall and the high temperatures recorded during the warm season. Historically, it was the fourth hottest summer since 1961 recorded in the region.
A cool and sunny autumn allowed the vines to successfully complete their vegetative and productive cycle. Winter ensured significant water recovery thanks to abundant rainfall in December and January.
Spring was variable. Overall, the average temperature was lower than the historical seasonal average, and vegetative growth was slow and gradual. In the first ten days of April, a late frost event partially compromised bud development, with a significant reduction in fertility.
From June onwards, high temperatures combined with scarce rainfall led to reduced cluster development, with an average weight lower than varietal standards.
From the very beginning, the utmost care was devoted to the grapes to avoid possible abiotic stress. In this vintage, vineyard exposure and topographical position were fundamental factors in preserving freshness and aromatic finesse in the fruit.

TASTING NOTES
Tenuta Grimaldi 2021 displays a straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights. Notes of flowers and white-fleshed fruit are in harmony with nuances of anise and aromatic herbs with slight menthol hints. The vibrant palate is balanced by the softer components of the wine, which closes with a savoury and persistent finish.

MILLESIMO
Confirming the global situation, the regional climate showed significant thermal anomalies that placed 2022 among the hottest vintages of recent decades. Rainfall below the average confirms the trend of recent years.
The not overly harsh winter nevertheless allowed a good recovery of water reserves, comparable to the previous vintage. Spring began with colder early months; subsequently, from May onwards, temperatures rose above the monthly average, ensuring rapid and significant vegetative growth. The high temperatures in June, together with the absence of rainfall, ensured optimal flowering, conditions that persisted in the following months. The general limitations from the very early stages of the season allowed the vine to adapt and better withstand situations of thermal and water stress. Close to ripening, the arrival of a few days of rain led to a drop in temperatures, ensuring a more favourable and suitable climate.
September was the only month of the year to record an abundant recovery of water reserves compared to the average, with continuous days of rain. This situation clearly defined two harvest periods, resulting in different aromatic expressions of the grapes in terms of maturity and the presence of noble rot in part of the crop.
